The Spring Primary Election just wrapped-up and below is a list of the winners with links to their campaign website (or more information) along with a link to their one-minute video introduction from those who participated in The Candidates and Elected Officials Forum.   

At The Chamber, we appreciate each and every candidate for their willingness to serve our community. Running a campaign is no easy feat and we respect everyone who filed to run for office. You can review the full list of primary election outcomes on the NC State Election Board Results webpage

As you probably know, two races on the ballots for Orange County voters were decided during the primary election in May: The Carrboro Town Council Special Election (1 seat) and the Orange County Schools Board of Education (4 seats).


Two Decided Races


Carrboro Town Council Special Election 

Congratulations to Eliazar Posada (D), who won Carrboro's special election with 3,396 votes (74%).

Orange County Schools Board of Education 

Congratulations to the top four vote-earners who secured seats on the Orange County Schools Board of Education. 

Andre Richmond earned the most (8,648) votes (19%).


Anne Purcell came in second with 7,128 votes (16%). 


Will Atherton was re-elected with 7,115 (16%).


Sarah Smylie was re-elected with 6,883 (15%). 




Candidates who Advance to the November General Election

The Chamber tracked 11 races with 39 candidates this past primary election (review The Chamber's primary election day announcement about the races and candidates). Below is a list of the winners of those primary elections who will advance to the General Election in November.  

U.S. House of Representatives (District 4)

Congratulations to Valerie P. Foushee who won the Democratic primary election with 12,633 votes (50%) and Courtney Geels who won the Republican primary election with 3,552 votes (70%). Both will advance to the general election in November. 

NC State Senate (District 23)

Congratulations to Graig R. Meyer who won the Democratic primary with 20,577 votes (83.71%) (watch) and Landon Woods won the Republican primary with 2,901 votes (62.97%) (watch). Both will advance to the general election in November.

NC House of Representatives (District 050)

Congratulations to Renee Price who won the primary election with 7,364 votes (71.84%) (watch). There was no Republican primary candidate. Candidate Price will be on the general election November ballot. 

NC House of Representatives (District 056)

Congratulations to Allen Buansi who won the Democratic primary with 7,653 votes (52%) (watch). There was on Republican primary candidate. Candidate Buansi will be on the general election November ballot. 

 District Attorney (District 18)

Congratulations to Jeff Nieman who won the Democratic primary with 15,287 votes (62.44%) (watch). There was on Republican primary candidate. Candidate Nieman will be on the general election November ballot.  

Orange County Board of Commissioners 

Congratulations to Sally Greene (At-Large; watch), Jamezetta R. Bedford (District 1, watch), Anna Richards (District 1, unexpired, watch), and Earl McKee (District 2) who all were unopposed and therefore did not appear on the primary election ballot. They will all be on the general election November ballot.  

Orange County Clerk of Court 

Congratulations to Mark Kleinschmidt (watchwho was unopposed and therefore did not appear on the primary election ballot. Candidate Kleinschmidt will be on the general election November ballot. 

Orange County Sheriff 

Congratulations to Charles Blackwood (watch) who was unopposed and therefore did not appear on the primary election ballot. Candidate Blackwood will be on the general election November ballot. 

Orange County Register of Deeds 

Congratulations to Mark H. Chilton (watch) who won the Democratic primary with 15,985 votes (64%). Candidate Chilton will be on the general election November ballot.
