Business and Community Leaders Honored at the 2024 Business Excellence Awards
Chapel Hill, NC – The Chamber for a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro hosted the 2024 Business Excellence Awards ceremony on Friday afternoon. Twenty-one finalists were honored, and 10 winners were presented awards live at American Legion: Chapel Hill Post 6. Dwight Bassett, Retired Chapel Hill Economic Development Director, was also recognized with a Lifetime Achievement in Economic Development Award at the event.
“We are so happy to be back at Post 6 for our 10th Annual Business Excellence Awards” said Aaron Nelson, President and CEO of The Chamber For a Greater Chapel Hill Carrboro. “It is an honor to share the stage with our community’s best businesses and leaders.”
The 10 Business Excellence award winners listed below were selected by The Chamber’s Awards Selection Committee, made up of local business and community leaders from diverse industries with a demonstrated commitment to our community. The Committee, chaired by Denny Marcin of Pinnacle Financial Partners, reviewed detailed pages of nominations from many nominees, selected three finalists in each category, and then voted by secret ballot on the winners.

The Lifetime Achievement in Economic Development Award
Dwight Bassett, Retired Chapel Hill Economic Development Director
For more than 35 years, Dwight Bassett has worked tirelessly to enhance the economic wellbeing and quality of life in multiple communities across the Southeast. Until his retirement last year, Bassett served as Director of Economic Development for the Town of Chapel Hill for more than 16 years, a tenure marked by significant community planning and economic development achievements that have left an indelible mark on the town's landscape.
Under Bassett's leadership, Chapel Hill attracted major investments that include new office spaces, new corporate headquarters, and a new downtown parking deck. He was instrumental in establishing Launch Chapel Hill, a downtown innovation hub and business accelerator, created in partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill and Orange County, that has supported over 75 startups since its inception. Bassett also focused on addressing the Town’s housing needs, exemplified by new apartment communities and infill development that has transformed the Blue Hill district into a walkable urban neighborhood. Throughout his career, Bassett demonstrated a commitment to making Chapel Hill a more vibrant and inclusive community. Many who worked closely with him credit his vision, patience, and collaborative nature as integral to shaping a more prosperous community on a sustainable path for the future.
The 2024 Business Excellence Award Winners
Dr. Shaina Holman, Holman Family Dental Care
The 2024 Businesswoman of the Year Award is presented to an exceptional woman in business, who has excelled in her job function and industry, and has pioneered initiatives to promote female leadership in business and the community. This year's award is sponsored by Olmaz Jewelers. The 2024 Businesswoman of the Year is Dr. Shaina Holman of Holman Family Dental Care.
Dr. Shaina Holman, owner of Holman Family Dental Care, has built an award-winning practice and a remarkable team through exceptional leadership. She prioritizes her team's well-being with employee-centric benefits and paid continuing education.
Starting the practice with two employees six and a half years ago, Dr. Holman now leads a team of 24, including mentoring two female dentists. Her practice has consistently won the Indy Week Best Dental Office award in Orange/Chatham County and was named Best Dental Office in the Triangle last year. Dr. Holman is also active in
the community, serving as President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Chapel Hill Chapter, and is a lifetime NAACP member.
Black Business Alliance Businessperson of the Year
Ada Umenwaliri, Ẹkẹ́ Foods & UNC-Chapel Hill
The Black Business Alliance Businessperson of the Year is presented to an exceptional person in business that has not only excelled in their job function and industry but has also pioneered initiatives to promote Black business and community leadership. The Black Business Alliance is proud to present the 2024 award to Ada Umenwaliri of UNC-Chapel Hill and Ẹkẹ́ Foods.
Ada Umenwaliri is the founder and owner of Ẹkẹ́Foods. She founded Ẹkẹ́Foods to make West African cuisine accessible, featuring products like Jollof Rice Sauce. In addition, Ada runs a growing catering company also specializing in West African cuisine and serves as an Associate Director of the African Studies Center at UNC-Chapel Hill.
She established the first African Heritage community at St. Thomas More and volunteers extensively. As a committed mentor, Ada guides students and campus groups to success. Balancing academia and entrepreneurship, she is also pursuing a PhD at Carolina. Ada exemplifies leadership and dedication to diversity and community engagement.
Young Professional of the Year
Alex Nickodem, Terra Nova + Compass
The 2024 Chapel Hill Young Professional of the Year Award is awarded to a local professional under the age of 40, who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in their industry and whose achievements have promoted young professional engagement through leadership in the community pertaining to economic development and civic involvement. The 2024 Young Professional of the Year is Alex Nickodem of Terra Nova & Compass.
Alex Nickodem, a dedicated real estate professional, is committed to making homeownership accessible. A former fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity, he promotes a "real estate for all" model, assisting first-time buyers, low-income individuals, and middle-income families. His efforts have inspired other professionals and resulted in helping 28 first-time buyers, 47% of his sales.
Named 2023 Best Realtor by Chapel Hill Magazine, Alex’s community impact extends beyond transactions. He spoke at an inclusionary housing summit, which led to his board membership with HOPE NC. Alex also represented Habitat for Humanity in purchasing 15 acres for future homes and donates 5% of his profits annually to Habitat.
Large Business of the Year
Carol Woods Retirement Community
The 2024 Large Business of the Year presented by PHE, Inc is presented to an outstanding Chamber member with 50 or more employees that has shown growth, innovation of product, exemplary customer service, response to adversity, and contribution to the community. The 2024 Large Business of the Year is Carol Woods Retirement Community.
Nonprofit continuing care retirement community Carol Woods is dedicated to fostering an inclusive community that promotes an active lifestyle supported by the region's educational, cultural, and medical resources. Their commitment to well-being empowers residents to pursue fulfilling activities and a sense of purpose.
Recognizing trends in 1999, Carol Woods expanded its campus and introduced the Early Acceptance program, which provides personal relationships and support for participants, granting them the same rights and privileges as on-campus residents. Committed to providing excellence for residents and staff, Carol Woods has received continuous recognition from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities since 1988 and the OSHA Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program designation since 2011 for maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
Through in-kind and monetary contributions to the town of Chapel Hill, Orange County, local schools and area organizations, Carol Woods contributes to the wellbeing and success of our community. Residents volunteer more than 25,000 hours a year to schools, hospitals, and government advisory groups among others.
For their innovation, commitment to safety, and contribution to community, we are proud to name Carol Woods the 2024 Large Business of the Year.

Mid-Size Business of the Year
School of Rock Chapel Hill
The 2024 Mid-Size Business of the Year is awarded to an outstanding Chamber member with 6-50 employees that has shown growth, innovation of product, exemplary customer service, response to adversity, and contribution to the community. The winner of the 2024 Mid-Size Business of the Year is School of Rock Chapel Hill.
Serving nearly 400 students, School of Rock Chapel Hill pioneers a unique approach to musical education, fostering teamwork, time management, and accountability through real rock band experiences. Moving beyond the franchisors' required instruments they have added instruction in saxophone, accordion, trumpet and banjo, making more comprehensive musical education available to local kids. They welcome students of all backgrounds and abilities, even offering an informal sliding scale price structure, ensuring everyone feels valued, welcomed, and ready to rock.
With an impressive team of 24 dedicated instructors and staff all earning a certified living wage, the school maintains near-zero turnover, ensuring continuity for students.
Attacking students’ stage fright and giving back to the community at the same time, School of Rock often performs at local fundraisers and partners with area organizations like the CHCCS Public School Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, SKJAJA, and others. This weekend, students from School of Rock will be playing a fundraising show for the Lineberger Cancer Center.

The 2024 Micro Enterprise Business of the Year presented by Piedmont Health is awarded to an outstanding Chamber member with 5 or fewer employees that has shown growth, innovation of product, exemplary customer service, response to adversity, and contribution to the community. The 2024 Micro Enterprise Business of the Year is My Muses Card Shop.
Local stationery and gifts abound at My Muses Card Shop. Opening in December 2019, My Muses Card Shop overcame challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic by expanding offerings beyond stationery to include art supplies and interactive art classes. This year My Muses launched their in-house greeting card line with artwork created by owner Abi Sivadas, and their upcoming expansion into a neighboring space for classes and gallery exhibits marks an exciting milestone in the shop’s growth.
My Muses focuses on stocking eco-friendly and ethically sourced products. Their emphasis on warmth, personalization, and attention to detail, the shop consistently exceeds customer expectations. This commitment to customer service is highlighted by a remarkable number of 5-star reviews.
Beyond its role as a retail establishment, My Muses Card Shop actively contributes to the community. By supporting local artists, facilitating art classes, and holding monthly meditation sessions, the shop fosters a vibrant cultural exchange that exemplifies its values as a responsible community member.

Kindred Heart Animal Hospital
One sign of a thriving economy is the growth of new businesses. The New Business of the Year presented by Town of Chapel Hill Economic Development is awarded to a business that has been operating for less than three years. The winner of the 2024 New Business of the Year Award is Kindred Heart Animal Hospital.
Since opening in July 2022 and expanding to Governors Village in May 2023, Kindred Heart Animal Hospital has demonstrated remarkable growth and innovation. Starting as a small team of five, they have expanded to a team of 17 staff members, including 4 doctors. Embracing a holistic approach to pet care, they have introduced Fear Free and Cat Friendly practices, demonstrating their dedication to creating a supportive environment for both pets and their owners. Their expansion into a second location and the addition of mobile services and grooming reflect their commitment to meeting the diverse needs of their community.
Beyond their core services, Kindred Heart actively collaborates with local businesses and hosts community events. Their partnerships with Meals on Wheels, Paws4Ever, and local rescue groups underscore their commitment to giving back and meeting people and their pets where they are.

The winner of the 2024 Community Impact Award is Piedmont Health Services.
Founded in Chapel Hill nearly 55 years ago, Piedmont Health Services has been a cornerstone of healthcare in Orange County and central North Carolina. The dedication of its remarkable staff, who consistently go above and beyond in their service, drives Piedmont’s mission of excellence.
Piedmont has significantly enhanced community health through its 10 Community Health Centers and two PACE SeniorCare centers, which serve five counties. PHS stands as a beacon of quality healthcare, providing medical, dental, pharmacy, nutrition, and senior care services to low-income families and marginalized populations. Upholding inclusivity, PHS ensures compassionate care for all, regardless of race, religion, national origin, disability, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or payment means.

The ArtsCenter
The Non-Profit of the Year presented by Brooks Pierce Law Firm recognizes an outstanding Chamber member charitable non-profit organization that has shown growth, innovation of product, exemplary customer service, response to adversity and/or contribution to community. The 2024 Non-Profit of the Year is The ArtsCenter.
Employing professional teaching artists, The ArtsCenter offers top-tier arts education, inviting people of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds to discover their creative voice in an inclusive environment. In 2023, The ArtsCenter celebrated the opening of its new home, featuring three distinct makerspaces: a STEAM Lab, a Digital Lab, and a Fiber Arts Lab, alongside a ceramics studio, painting studio, and theater.
The ArtsCenter is committed to building partnerships with other local non-profits to serve under-engaged populations. By expanding outreach and offering scholarships and satellite programs, they eliminate barriers to access and create a fair, equitable, and transformative community hub, enhancing a sense of belonging in Carrboro and the greater Triangle area.
Celebrating their 50th Anniversary, The ArtsCenter has transformed from a one-room arts school into an 18,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art, multi-disciplinary facility, remaining a cornerstone of downtown Carrboro and defining it as a creative community.
