President's Update: UNC Returns + New Governor's Order + New County Orders + Reopening Guide + PPP

CEO Statement
Yesterday, our community received the tremendous news that UNC Chapel Hill will be reopening in August (more details below).  And so we conclude an extraordinary week with some schoolwork/homework of our own to do – and it involves reading.
The last few days have brought many new announcements, new rules, new guidance and new opportunities.  I know that it’s hard to carve out a few hours to sit and read, but investing the time today and tomorrow to read and review the content behind the links below will help you prepare for success in the weeks and months ahead.
Rally Cap
You might be tired. Long week. Long 10 weeks. But here we are. Together. In a generational crisis. Committed. Resilient. Ready to help lead the organization that depends on you.  You are not alone. Your Chamber, your peers, your advisors, your government, your friends, your family, your customers and clients - we are all here, in this together, working together, to support you.
NC Governor’s Phase 2
Today, at 5:00pm, North Carolina will move to ‘Safer At Home Phase 2’ (Executive Order 141) that eases restrictions on travel, restaurant operations, business activity and mass gatherings.  Phase 2 will run through at least June 26.  The reading:
- Executive Order 141 (the details are important and only a 20-min read, faster if you skip the whereases)
- Frequently Asked Questions about Executive Order 141 (15 minutes read. I’m not a fan of FAQs… but I highly recommend these)
- Visual Summary of Phase 2 Restrictions/Changes (Very helpful infographic - click it, share it)
- NC DHHS Guidance for various Settings and Business Sectors (helpful reference site to bookmark)

  - All businesses are recommended to require customers to wear a face covering while inside the business.
Durham Highlights:
  - Restaurant dining rooms, barbers, personal care businesses, and swimming pools remain closed through June 1.
  - Face coverings required in public.

PPP – Don’t Have the Money
The Paycheck Protection Program still has funds available.  If you were discouraged by your first effort, please rally and try again.  More than $100 billion remains to support you (business, non-profit, LLC, sole proprietor, contractor, etc.) More PPP Info
PPP – Have the Money
Congratulations on getting your PPP.  Now, let's make sure the loan is forgiven.  A few days ago the SBA issued a loan forgiveness application with clear guidance on forgiveness.  For help preparing your application, UNC’s Small Business Technology Development Center can help.
You’ve Got This.  And We’ve Got You
Memorial Weekend was never really the time for sales, celebrations, and picnics – though that’s what many of us did.  Memorial Day is a somber holiday to think about sacrifice, loss, remembrance and, renewal.  Please take this weekend to Read. Reflect. Plan. Prepare. Innovate. Persist. Recharge. And READ. You got this, and your Chamber is always here to help.
A Little Reward to Making it to the End of this Email
Why is an order from the Governor a Gubernatorial Order and not a Governatorial one?  You always wondered.  Click here to Listen (no need to read this one) and find out.
Thank you
At the Chamber, our mission is to Connect you, Advocate for you, Drive Progress, and Build Community. Your membership funds our work to serve and support you and our community. We are grateful.
