Chapel Hill Town Council Approves 100 New Parking Spaces in Downtown Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill Town Council Approves 100 New Parking Spaces in Downtown Chapel Hill

Joint Statement from The Chamber and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership Praising Chapel Hill Town Council and Staff for Expanding Parking in Downtown

We applaud the Chapel Hill Mayor and Town Council for unanimously approving the addition of 100 parking spaces and funding the needed repairs to the Wallace Parking Deck in downtown Chapel Hill.

This decision, made last night during the Council’s regular business meeting, will provide new parking spaces at less than one-third the average cost for structured parking. This is a prudent and important step in addressing the immediate need for more parking in the heart of downtown.

Under Mayor Hemminger’s leadership, several parking improvements have been made, including better lighting, wayfinding, and meters, the launch of a
new online parking guide -, and an easy-to-use-parking app, Parkmobile.

We believe more parking is needed, and agree with Council Member Gu, who called for a comprehensive parking plan that will adequately and appropriately address the growing parking demand for the long-term.

We look forward to working with the Mayor, Council, and staff on that long-term comprehensive plan.

Again, thank you Mayor Hemminger and Council Members Bell, Buansi, Gu, Oates, Parker, Schaevitz, and Stegman. We also share our compliments of town staff for developing and putting forward this timely proposal, namely Manager Jones, Chief Blue, Director Norris, Director Hitchings, Chris Roberts, Meg McGurk, and Dwight Bassett.
