Introducing the (un)forum 2019

27 candidates, 7 races, 1 easy platform for voters to meet and connect with the local candidates on their ballot

CHAPEL HILL, NC: The (un)forum 2019, a virtual candidate forum, is now live on the internet and ready for voters to meet the local contenders for Chapel Hill Mayor and Town Council, Carrboro Mayor and Board of Aldermen, Hillsborough Mayor and Board of Commissioners, and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education.

The (un)forum 2019 is coordinated by The Chamber For a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro in partnership with six diverse organizations: Carrboro Business AllianceChapel Hill Alliance for a Livable Town (CHALT); Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of CommerceHome Builders Association of Durham, Orange, and Chatham CountiesNEXT Chapel Hill-Carrboro; and the Orange County Affordable Housing Coalition.

“Instead of a traditional, in-person candidate forum, we are using a dynamic digital platform to engage candidates in conversations, and the videos will be shared through our collective networks of more than 100,000 people who live and/or work in our region,” said Katie Loovis, Vice President of External Affairs for The Chamber For a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro.

All 27 candidates who filed for the seven local races were invited to participate in the (un)forum and respond by video to the questions:
  1. Tell us about yourself, your background, your strengths, and why you think you are prepared to serve if elected.
  2. Tell us why you are running for office and what your top three priorities are (feel free to use some examples of what you would advocate for to bring your priorities to life).
  3. What three things will you do to make your community a great place to start and grow a business?
  4. What do you think could be done to grow the supply of affordable and workforce housing?
  5. What specific transportation improvements would you like to see over the next five years?
The (un)forum, powered by local technology company, shineBIG, is now in its third year and continues to make it convenient for candidates and constituents to connect. Two hallmarks of the (un)forum 2019 are the first-ever engagement with school board candidates and the most-ever partner organizations.

The partner organizations expressed their appreciation of each candidate for being willing to put in the time to serve our region and work through complex issues.

"The (un)forum helps our community understand which candidates are prepared to grow and adapt Chapel Hill and Carrboro to the rapidly evolving needs of its residents, regardless of income. We appreciate the candidates taking the time to participate." Molly De Marco, PhD MPH, Chair, NEXT Chapel Hill-Carrboro

“Thanks to the Chamber for providing a great service to the community,” said Julie McClintock, volunteer, CHALT. “Fall is a busy time and these ‘in person’ interviews are a great way to learn more about the candidates who will be making important decisions for our town.”
